Bohol is the tenth-largest island in the Philippines and SiquiRide’s first destination beyond Siquijor.

It sits in Central Visayas, about 72 km south of Cebu City (provincial tourism figure). People put it on a Philippines route because three different trips sit on one island: the Chocolate Hills, Philippine tarsiers and the marine sites off Panglao.

This page is the destination hub. It should help you decide whether Bohol fits, where to sleep, how long to stay and how the main days connect. Dedicated supporting guides are written and publish after this hub — they are not live yet. Until then, use the sections on this page.

It is not a Siquijor article with the name swapped. Bohol is much larger. Distances, hotel concentration and how tours are sold mean most first-time trips work better as a chosen base plus day trips, not as a coastal scooter loop. That is a planning recommendation, supported below — not a rule.

Why go: Chocolate Hills, tarsiers, a countryside/river day and a Panglao dive or island-hopping day.

Where to stay on a first trip: Panglao is the practical recommendation — the airport, most hotels, dive boats and countryside-tour pickups concentrate there. Choose Alona for restaurants and dive shops; choose another Panglao beach if you want a quieter night.

How long: 3 days covers the classic combination. 2 days is a squeeze. 4 days adds Anda or a second water day without stacking van + boat back-to-back.

How to arrive: Fly into Bohol–Panglao Airport (TAG) or take a fast ferry of about 2 hours from Cebu, Siquijor or Dumaguete into Tagbilaran.

How to get around: Interior day → hired car/van or a shared tour. Panglao → scooter, tricycle or limited Grab. A full-island scooter loop is possible for experienced riders. It is not the pattern this guide leads with.

Best time: November–May for drier weather and calmer seas. The hills look brown late in the dry season, typically April–May if rain has been low.

A practical first-trip pattern

This is how infrastructure is arranged — not the only way to travel.

Evidence behind the pattern

  • The commercial airport (TAG) is on Panglao, not in Tagbilaran.
  • Provincial tourism highlights Panglao and Anda as the well-known beach areas.
  • Booking platforms list the largest hotel cluster on Panglao / Alona.
  • Countryside tours and island-hopping boats are sold with Panglao / Alona pickup.
  • GrabCar, per official tourism, covers Tagbilaran–Dauis–Panglao only.
  • Carmen (Chocolate Hills) is commonly 75–120 minutes from Panglao by private vehicle. Anda is commonly 2.5–3 hours. Those are not errands.

So a first trip usually looks like this:

  1. Sleep on Panglao — beach, restaurants, boats, airport, tour pickup.
  2. One full inland day — Chocolate Hills, a tarsier sanctuary, Loboc River, plus a couple of heritage or countryside stops.
  3. One water day — Balicasag / Virgin Island or a dive day.
  4. Leftover time — Hinagdanan Cave, a quieter Panglao beach, or if the trip is long enough, the east coast around Anda.

Other patterns work: Tagbilaran for a dawn ferry, Loboc if the river is the holiday, Anda if empty sand is the point, two bases if you have 5+ days. They cost more time in a vehicle.

Why Visit Bohol

Bohol is not only a beach island. The reason it earns its own destination hub is that geology, wildlife, countryside and reef sit within a few hours of each other.

Nature and geology

In 2023 UNESCO designated Bohol Island a Global Geopark — the first in the Philippines. The official listing describes a landscape assembled over about 150 million years of tectonic uplift.

The signature geosite is the Chocolate Hills. UNESCO records 1,268 conical hills, about 30 to 400 meters high, formed from uplifted limestone. They were declared a National Geological Monument in 1988. In wet months they are green. Late in the dry season the grass browns and the name makes sense.

The same story includes caves, marine terraces and the coastal platform lifted by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake of 15 October 2013.

Beaches and marine

Panglao holds most resort infrastructure and the better-known dive and snorkel sites. Balicasag is the name travelers hear for turtles and wall diving. Virgin Island is the sandbar usually paired with it.

Anda, on the east coast, is the quieter beach alternative. It is a different trip, not a side errand from Alona.

Countryside and river

Between Tagbilaran and Carmen the road runs through rice land, the mahogany stretch in Bilar and Loboc, where floating restaurants run a lunch cruise that most countryside day tours include.

Heritage and culture

Bohol is where the 1565 Sandugo (blood compact) between Miguel López de Legazpi and Datu Sikatuna is commemorated. Spanish-era churches — Baclayon, Dauis, Panglao — sit on the standard circuit. Several were damaged in 2013 and later restored. July’s Sandugo Festival in Tagbilaran is the main civic event.

UNESCO also notes the Eskaya community in the southeast and the Banacon mangrove plantation in Getafe. Those are real places. They are not automatic first-trip stops.

If the only thing you want is a small, scooter-scale island, Siquijor is the better match. That is a product difference, not a ranking.

Best Things to Do in Bohol

An experience map, not an attraction directory.

Chocolate Hills

The reason most people can name Bohol.

The main public viewpoint is the Chocolate Hills Complex in Carmen. From the parking area, a stair climb — widely reported as 214 steps — leads to a deck over the cones. Sagbayan Peak is a private alternative with extra park activities and, in traveler reports, smaller crowds.

From Panglao, plan 75–120 minutes each way by private vehicle. That is why the hills belong on a countryside day, not a sunset run from Alona.

Entrance fees reported in 2025–2026 sit in a ₱100–₱150 band for non-residents after a Carmen municipal increase announced for 1 October 2025. Treat that as a range. Confirm at the gate.

Philippine tarsiers

One of the world’s smallest primates. Nocturnal, easily stressed, not a prop.

Two names appear on tour itineraries:

Corella fees are not stable across sources (older guides ₱60–₱80; some 2026 visitor reports higher). This page does not publish a single “official” peso figure. Confirm on the day.

If welfare practice matters, ask which sanctuary is included before you book. They are not the same place.

The countryside day

Bohol’s standard organized product. For a first visit it is the efficient way to see the interior in one day.

A typical van day stacks some or all of:

  • Blood Compact Shrine
  • Baclayon Church
  • Tarsier stop (Corella or Bilar — ask)
  • Loboc River lunch cruise
  • Bilar man-made mahogany forest (a roadside drive-through)
  • Chocolate Hills Complex
  • Sometimes a hanging bridge, butterfly garden or “mirror of the world” add-on

Shared tours are sold per person. Private cars and vans are sold per vehicle for a set number of hours. Inclusions vary. Always ask: pickup point, lunch, which tarsier stop, which gate fees are extra.

Independent travelers can drive the same route. Public buses can reach Carmen. They are a poor tool for doing the whole circuit in one day.

Loboc River

A freshwater cruise, usually with a buffet and onboard music. The river is the reason to go. Traveler reports on food and entertainment are mixed. If you dislike a show atmosphere, say so when you book — some operators offer a simpler boat.

Commonly reported cruise + lunch prices sit around ₱350–₱550 per person, sometimes plus a separate environmental or security charge. Confirm when you buy the ticket.

Panglao beaches

Alona Beach is the commercial engine: dive shops, restaurants, bars, boat touts, mid-range hotels. Convenient. Not the quietest sand on the island.

Other Panglao stretches (Dumaluan and neighboring beaches) are often calmer. Stay near Alona for logistics. Stay elsewhere on Panglao if the strip is the problem.

Island hopping, diving, snorkeling

The standard boat day from Panglao is Balicasag + Virgin Island, sometimes with a dawn dolphin-watching run.

  • Balicasag — marine sanctuary, turtles, wall. Snorkel and dive.
  • Virgin Island — sandbar. Photographs, not a full beach day by itself.

Boats are usually priced per boat, so groups win on cost. Sanctuary and environmental fees are extra and change. Do not treat a 2023 blog price as current.

Diving is a separate product from the tourist snorkel day. If diving is the point, pick the hotel for the boat schedule.

Caves, waterfalls, east-coast nature

Worth knowing. Not all of them belong on a 3-day first trip.

  • Hinagdanan Cave (Dauis, on Panglao Island) — limestone cave with a pool. Easy add-on from Panglao. Entrance commonly reported around ₱50, plus a swim fee around ₱75. Confirm on site.
  • Can-umantad Falls (Candijay) — often described as Bohol’s highest waterfall; mentioned in UNESCO geopark reporting. East-coast time, not a Panglao afternoon.
  • Anda cave pools and beaches — a different base. About 2–2.5 hours from Tagbilaran.

Heritage stops

  • Blood Compact Shrine (Bool, Tagbilaran) — free, quick, on the way.
  • Baclayon Church — among the oldest stone churches in the country; damaged in 2013, later restored. A small museum fee is sometimes charged.
  • Dauis Church and Panglao Church / watchtower — easy if you are already on that island.

These are 20–40 minute stops. They fill gaps. They are not the reason to come.

Bohol has one city and 47 municipalities. Travelers use about six zones.

Panglao and Alona

For most first visits, this is the base that wastes the least time.

Why that recommendation is practical, not decorative:

  • You land at TAG, on this island.
  • Dive and island-hopping boats leave from here.
  • Countryside vans advertise pickup here.
  • Food and tourist services are densest around Alona.

Alona is a neighborhood of Panglao, not a separate destination. A standalone Alona page is not justified.

Tagbilaran and Dauis

Tagbilaran is where the fast craft docks, where Island City Mall and the Dao bus terminal sit and where ATMs are reliable.

Stay in the city if you have a dawn ferry or you do not care about a beach. Otherwise sleep on Panglao and treat Tagbilaran as an errand.

Loboc and the countryside

Makes sense if the river is the holiday. Redundant if you are already doing the cruise from a Panglao hotel.

Anda and the east coast

The answer to “I want Bohol’s beach without Alona.” It is also a 2.5–3 hour ride from Panglao. That is an overnight or a dedicated long day — not a footnote on a 3-day trip.

A standalone Anda guide is a future candidate, not a must for this pillar.

Day-trip zones, not bases

Carmen, Sagbayan, Corella, Bilar, Baclayon: go, see, leave. A Carmen hotel only makes sense if sunrise over the hills is the entire point of the stay.

Where to Stay in Bohol

Choose an area, then a budget band. This page is not a hotel directory and it does not contain SiquiRide “picks.”

  • Assuming every “Panglao” map pin is walkable to Alona.

How to Get to Bohol

Two clean arrivals. Everything else is a variation.

Fly into TAG (Panglao)

Bohol–Panglao International Airport (TAG) opened in 2018 on Panglao Island. It replaced the old Tagbilaran Airport. The IATA code stayed TAG.

You land near the resorts, not in the city. Alona is often 10–25 minutes by car. Tagbilaran is often 25–45 minutes.

As of August 2026, published domestic service commonly includes Cebu Pacific and PAL Express from Manila (and some secondary cities). Philippines AirAsia Manila–TAG has been reported as ending 30 September 2026. That is not confirmed here from an airline advisory. Check the booking engine for your dates.

International service is mostly seasonal or charter (South Korea has been the usual market). Most foreign visitors still enter via Manila or Cebu, then hop to TAG or take the ferry.

Ferry from Cebu

The highest-volume sea route.

  • Cebu Pier 1 → Tagbilaran Port on OceanJet or SuperCat: about 2 hours, multiple daily trips.
  • OceanJet tourist / open-air fare, official 10 July 2026: ₱880. Business: ₱1,320. Terminal fees extra.
  • Cebu → Getafe (north Bohol): official OceanJet tourist ₱495 — useful if you are heading toward northern or eastern Bohol, not Panglao.
  • FastCat Cebu → Tubigon carries passengers and vehicles in about 1.5 hours, then you still have a land transfer south.

SuperCat and Lite Ferries also sell the Cebu–Tagbilaran corridor. Their current fares are not published on this page — older blogs still quote figures that no longer match OceanJet’s official tariff.

Ferry from Siquijor

The SiquiRide network route.

OceanJet Tagbilaran ⇄ Siquijor, official 10 July 2026: ₱880 tourist / ₱1,320 business, about 2 hours. Schedules move. OceanJet cancelled selected trips in late July–August 2026 for operational adjustments. Reconfirm the day before.

Other ports

Jagna (southeast) has Mindanao / Camiguin connections. Useful on a longer Visayas–Mindanao route. Not a first-timer arrival.

How to Get Around Bohol

Official provincial tourism is clear on two points that trip visitors up:

  1. Bohol does not have a traditional city taxi fleet.
  2. GrabCar exists, but only in Tagbilaran–Dauis–Panglao. You will not reliably Grab to Loboc or Carmen.

DOT-accredited tourist vehicles carry a rainbow plate. Ask for one when you hire.

A valid license is required for self-drive. Traffic enforcers do check.

Organized tours

The countryside day and the island-hopping day are products. They exist because the distances and the boat logistics punish a first-timer who tries to freelance everything in one day.

Shared countryside days are commonly advertised in a ₱800–₱2,500 per person band depending on inclusions. Private hires are per vehicle.

Why this guide does not lead with a scooter loop

On Siquijor, a scooter is the correct default. The coastal loop is short and the attractions sit on it.

On Bohol, a 125cc from Alona to Carmen is a long, hot, high-traffic ride — then the same ride home after a full day of sun. People do it. This hub does not treat that as the beginner plan.

Practical split: scooter on Panglao if you already ride and have a motorcycle license. Car, van or tour for the interior unless you already ride at that distance.

A Cebu day trip to Bohol exists (ferry + rushed countryside + ferry). It is possible. It is a long day for a short look at the hills. Overnight is the better product.

Bohol Travel Tips

  • Cash before the countryside. ATMs are reliable in Tagbilaran and present in parts of Panglao / Alona. Gate fees, tricycles and many boats are cash.
  • Download offline maps before you leave wifi. Interior signal is uneven.
  • SIM: Globe and Smart. Buy in Tagbilaran or at the airport if a booth is open.
  • Start the hills day early. Heat and tour-bus timing are worse after mid-morning.
  • Ask which tarsier stop is on the itinerary. Corella ≠ Bilar.
  • Rainbow plate = DOT-accredited tourist vehicle.
  • Grab is not island-wide. Tagbilaran–Dauis–Panglao only, per official tourism.
  • A car license is not a motorcycle license.
  • Holy Week and Christmas — book the bed and the ferry first.
  • Reef and tarsiers are not props. No flash on tarsiers. No standing on coral. No chasing turtles.
  • Travel times are not Siquijor times. Carmen is a journey. Anda is a journey.

Cebu also has a ferry to Dumaguete. That is a Cebu–Negros hop, not a Bohol arrival.

Bohol ↔ Cebu

Highest frequency. Fast craft about 2 hours, Tagbilaran–Pier 1. Some air schedules also exist. This is how most international visitors arrive if they do not fly TAG.

A Cebu destination hub does not exist on SiquiRide yet.

Yes, if you want the hills, tarsiers and a different marine day. No, if you only want another Alona-style strip — Cebu already sells that product.

How many days do I need in Bohol?
Three is the honest minimum for countryside + marine + an arrival buffer. Two works as a Cebu add-on. Four is more comfortable.

Where should I stay in Bohol?
Panglao is the practical first-trip recommendation (airport, hotels, boats, tour pickups). Tagbilaran for an early ferry. Anda only if the trip is long enough to justify the drive.

Is Alona Beach the same as Panglao?
Alona is the busy beach village on Panglao Island. Panglao is the island (and a municipality). You can stay on Panglao and never sleep on Alona.

Can I do Bohol by scooter like Siquijor?
You can scooter Panglao. The interior is a different decision. A motorcycle license, experience and respect for the distance to Carmen are required. This hub does not treat a full-island scooter loop as the beginner plan.

Is there Grab or Uber in Bohol?
Official tourism: GrabCar in Tagbilaran, Dauis and Panglao only. No traditional taxi fleet. No island-wide ride-hailing.

How do I get from Cebu to Bohol?
Fast ferry Cebu Pier 1 → Tagbilaran (about 2 hours) is the standard. Flying into TAG is the faster door-to-resort option if the airfare makes sense.

How do I get from Siquijor to Bohol?
OceanJet between Siquijor and Tagbilaran, about 2 hours. Confirm the day’s schedule; it changes.

When do the Chocolate Hills turn brown?
Late dry season, typically April–May, if rainfall has been low. They are green after sustained rain. Both versions are the real hills.

Which tarsier sanctuary should I visit?
Ask for the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary in Corella if conservation practice is the priority. Many tours use the Bilar stop because it sits on the countryside route. They are not the same place.

Is Bohol safe?
It is generally treated as one of the more orderly Visayan provinces for tourists. Use normal port and nightlife awareness in Alona and at the ferry terminals. This is not a first-hand safety audit.

Do I need to book the countryside tour in advance?
In peak months, yes. In the wet season you can often arrange it the day before through a hotel or a rainbow-plate operator.
